Council plan to leave space for star gazers
THE Clarence City Council has decided to modify draft amendments to its planning
scheme, aimed at ensuring the effective future operation of Cambridge's Mt
Canopus space observatory.
This follows a direction to the council earlier this year from the Resource
Planning and Development Commission for the council to make major changes
to its planning review amendments.
The proposed changes will be subjected to public scrutiny and the commission
will make the final decision.
The commission's direction followed arguments from astronomers that light
radiation from high-density housing developments would adversely impact on
the effective operation of the observatory, operated by the University of
Tasmania.
A consultant's report to the council said the relocation of the observatory
would cost between $500,000 and $1 million and that limiting development in
the area around the observatory was a suitable alternative to the relocation
of the observatory.
