AURORAL IMAGES
Sunday 25th and Tuesday 27th of July - the Southern Lights/Aurora
was in full swing here in Tasmania. I noticed it at about 8:30pm both nights
from home on the outskirts of Devonport. These are some of my photos. At times
all the colours of the rainbow could be seen in the aurora display particularly
on the horizon. You can just get a glimpse of the colours in the last photo
- you had to be there! Distinct auroral curtains could be seen at times Amazing
glowing arcs from east to west. Needed a fisheye lens to get it all in. All
these photos are shot with a 28mm lens on Olympus OM1camera with 400 speed
print film. Shapes we continually changing - notice the horizon colour, to
my eye I could see blue green orange red purple white and yellow. The moon
was also high in the sky at the time but did not dampen the auroral display.
Most photos were relatively short 10 second exposures. The last photo was
taken on Sunday night - the blobs just above the horizon are clouds.
