ASTRO IMAGES by Peter Sayers

South celestial pole with tree
Fuji Sensia slide film. ISO 400. 2-hour exposure. Olympus OM1 camera fitted with 28mm lens set at f/5.6. Camera mounted on a sturdy tripod. Processed one stop (ISO 800) to improve contrast of the tree against the background sky. The brightest stars at the top are the Southern Cross constellation with the star Canopus passing under the tree (some low cloud interfering at the end of Canopus' star trail) This photo was relatively easy to achieve, the only real problems were waiting for consistent fine weather for the two hour exposure and for the brightest stars to be in the their right positions.

Orion
1-hour exposure. Kodak P1600 Professional Colour Reversal film.
Olympus OM1 camera with 50mm lens (f/1.8) fitted with cross screen to create the sparkle effect. Tracking on equatorial telescope mount at sidereal rate. Looking to the right of the photo, Barnard's Loop can be seen as the faint pink loop. Betelgeuse is the bright orange star to the lower right.

Star trails
1-hour exposure. Kodak Elite 2 slide film. ISO 200. Olympus OM1 camera with 28mm lens set at f/4. Camera mounted on a sturdy tripod. The two brightest stars at top left are "The Pointers" or Alpha and Beta Centauri, the short streak above the telescope is most likely an Iridium flare, the red "wisp" of light in the background is Peter walking around the back of the building with a red torch and the glow near the fence is from car headlights about two kilometres away. The telescope was "painted red" with my red LED torch for a few minutes near the end of the exposure.

Moon light
2-hour exposure. Fuji ISO 100 slide film. Olympus OM1 camera with 50mm lens set at f/8. This photo is rather unique because it was taken at midnight using the full Moon to illuminate the scene. This allows the star trails of the Southern Cross to be seen. Not an easy photo to achieve. The abandoned homestead to the right is around circa 1880.

Mercury transit
8:30am 16th November 1999. Vixen 200mm cassegrain fitted with full aperture Thousand Oaks solar filter. Telescope on equatorial mount tracking at sidereal rate. Olympus OM1 camera using Fuji ISO 400 slide film. Eyepiece projection employed using 25mm eyepiece with a combined focal ratio of f/16 at 1/125 exposure time. Duration of transit was 40 minutes and photo taken just after mid-transit.
