HOBART SOUTHERN GROUPS FLOWER SHOW

To Greater Hobart Area Primary Schools
Attention All Teachers

Dear Teachers,
The Australian Plants Society Tasmania Inc. (APST) Southern Groups will be holding their biennial Wildflower Spectacular in the Hobart City Hall from 8 to 10 October this year.

We invite you to participate in our Primary School’s art and story competitions.
The rules are as follows:
1.    The competitions open on 15 June and close on 30 July 2010 and are open to all students in the Greater Hobart area primary schools:
•     In lower primary – kindergarten to grade 2, and
•     In upper primary – grades 3 to 6.
2.    For the art competition, the students are required to draw/paint a picture of a Tasmanian native flower or flowers with or without leaves on A3 or A4 paper. The botanical name(s) of the species is (are) to be written on the lower right hand corner of the page and the student’s name, class and school are to be written on the rear.
3.    For the story competition, the students are required to write a one or two A4 page story about a Tasmanian native plant.  The story may be a fiction or non-fiction.  It could be a description of the plant, where it is found and what its uses to people and/or animals and insects e.g. Eucryphia lucida – Tasmanian Leatherwood - feeds bees which make the special Leatherwood honey for humans and animals to eat.  It could cover biodiversity or the world without the plant and/or the bees.  The botanical name of the plant must be used in the title and the introduction, but the story teller may revert to the common name if it makes better sense.  The abbreviation as per E. lucida may be used after the full name has been written for the first time.  The story must have the student’s name, class and school written on the rear of each page.
4.    Teachers would be required to select the 3 best entries in each of the four categories for their school.
5.    The selected entries are to be sent in C4 envelopes (A4 fits flat, fold A3 in half) by Australia Post to 7 Clarke Avenue, Battery Point, 7004 and must be received by 13 August 2010.
6.    Judging will be done by members of APST.
•      For the art competition the members would be some of our groups who prepare drawings for our Identikit booklets.
•      For the story competition, the members would be people who prepare articles for publication in our newsletters and journals.
7.    Results will be notified to the participating schools by email by 3 September and on our web site www.apstashobart.org.au .  All entries will be displayed in the foyer or the main hall of the Hobart City Hall and entry will be free to the show.

The prizes are as follows:
